The Hidden Cost of Conflict

How Neutral Facilitation Can Save Your Business

Have you ever watched two leaders—both passionate, both capable—spiral into mistrust, miscommunication, and ultimately, mutual destruction?

I have. And the cost to the business is always higher than either side realizes.

Recently, I was asked to step in as a neutral facilitator between two executives whose partnership had completely broken down.
What started as mutual excitement to build something great together had devolved into unprofessional communication, emotional reactions, and the very real threat of litigation.

Both leaders were exhausted. Their teams were confused. The mission was on life support. But here’s the truth no one talks about: conflict isn’t the problem—unresolved conflict is.

What Happened Next

Through a structured process that prioritized clarity, curiosity, and emotional control, I was able to help both leaders:

  • Name the real issues (not just the surface complaints)
  • See the impact their behavior was having on the business and people they cared about
  • Find common ground (even if it wasn’t 100% of what they each wanted)
  • Commit to forward movement with dignity and accountability

And while they didn’t leave as best friends, they left with a resolution that avoided legal escalation and allowed the business to move forward.

Why This Matters

Conflict is unavoidable. But when it’s left unaddressed, it creates:

  • Lost productivity
  • Broken relationships
  • High turnover
  • Legal fees
  • Damaged reputation
  • And in some cases, the complete collapse of a business

Neutral facilitation isn’t about choosing sides. It’s about creating a structured environment where both sides can be heard, clarity can emerge, and solutions can be found.

Words That Matter

A Chapter, A Connection, A Calling

In challenging situations, it's easy to let emotions like frustration or anger take over. However, a more effective approach lies in curiosity. Shifting from emotional reactions to asking thoughtful questions allows for deeper insights, better problem-solving, and stronger relationships. As a business consultant and leadership coach, I’ve learned that curiosity encourages open dialogue, fosters innovation, and promotes continuous learning. This mindset shift, inspired by one of my mentors at Ingram Micro, has shaped my coaching practice at FM22. By embracing curiosity, leaders can create environments where teams feel motivated and empowered to take initiative and solve problems collaboratively.
